SPINNING CLUB: Said Durra – Pure Imagination
Enter the cinematic soul infused Willy Wonka world of Said Durra and exit with your senses elevated by a cultural expansion of the most uplifting and sweetest sounds. Perhaps it is Said’s rich heritage that gives him such a phenomenally mind expanding lens into music, art and culture; born to a Bosnian-Palestinian mother and Jordanian-Lebanese father, his DJ sets and indeed his sensibility have a Middle Eastern sophistication and wisdom infused throughout them.
“Said’s rich heritage that gives him such a phenomenally mind expanding lens into music, art and culture.”
With an all around the world approach to his music the crowd get to bathe in sprinkles of heavenly Hip Hop, Jazz, Samba, Iranian and Togolese Funk, Lebanese folk, roots reggae, Nigerian and Ghanian highlife, Trinidadian boogie and my favourite Punjabi Pop;
A genre I think Said single handedly identified to my delight as along with disco it’s the soundtrack I grew up with thanks to my parents love of technicolour Indian films and hosting house parties deep into the nights which us kids were never banned from but encouraged to join in on. I first heard Said play the track Zindagi Meri Dance Dance track at Experimental Beach and almost cried into my tequila with sentimentality as childhood memories embraced me giddily and made me want to call home just to hear my mothers voice.
Such is the majesty and power of music to conjure up deep emotions connecting strangers and lovers in the club alike. Connection and belonging
Such is the majesty and power of music to conjure up deep emotions connecting strangers and lovers in the club alike. Connection and belonging is a feeling that Said associates strongly with arriving in Ibiza. It’s that unexplainable “thing” that many of us have with this glorious island tying us together in sweet harmony. London raised Said’s journey from Qatar to Ibiza was in pursuit of love, the kind of love for a life and freedom that comes from daring greatly and jumping into the unknown. In his case Said changed his career from a successful TV Producer to a now successful Island DJ and most recently record producer. The Grandmaster Flash of everything from the obscure to pop goes pop, Said recently had the space and time to create his first production, a remix for Maaula Records, a musical manoeuvre we all hope to hear more of on the dancefloor and truly the silver lining of lockdown for him.

The ground beneath his creative path may also have been paved in part by his inspirational uncle who was a pioneer of art in the Arab world at a time when art wasn’t valued in Jordan. This expressive gene is also alive and kicking in his hugely talented sister, Zeina Durra, an acclaimed writer-director who is surely but slowly disrupting the way female filmmakers are being recognised and received, clearing the way for future generations.
Similarly, in a parallel musical universe listening to one of Said’s sets on an Island where EDM is popular is like winning the golden ticket to another dimension. Passionate, effervescent, kind and with a wicked sense of humour, Said has a different playlist and vision to the norm. Curating all of the juicy musical flavours of his life, the global perspectives, languages, people and places he has encountered, Said joyfully wraps them up in warmth, gratitude, goofy voices and lots of laughter much like the intoxicatingly sublime musical journey of total joy he takes you on.
